Terrifying
David makes it all sound very straightforward. But, just like anyone else, when he makes these calls he’s really scared. “It’s terrifying. Nobody likes rejection. The only advantage I have is I’ve been an actor – I’ve been through hundreds of auditions and been rejected countless times. But I’m still terrified now that they’ll say no. I want to talk to the head of digital strategy at ITV – never met them. They might not even like the idea of Aframe. But you’ve still got to try and get hold of them. It’s not easy.”
Whilst David was raising money for his new company idea, he didn’t tell anybody about it in the industry. Everybody was made to sign non-disclosure agreements.
“I was worried about people doing something similar before we did and I was really enjoying building it all and there was no one to impress except me. I also wanted to be able to come out with something that worked. Once I’d delivered on what I said I was going to, it was easier when I came to raising the next £300k, which ended up being £500k. The investors all went out to their friends saying, ‘Here’s David, he’s already done this.’ Which helped me raise that next round of money.”
David then moved into offices and brought in the first team of developers.
“Again I didn’t tell anybody. I just kept building and putting it to the test. I brought in clients to try it. Some of them were old clients and some were new ones who just loved the idea and wanted to give it a go. We still have our first invoice framed. A lot of people will buy into the future of what you’re doing. They understand that it’s not perfect yet, and that it still has problems. But they also know you’re going to look after them and love them so much, just as long as you don’t let them down you price it accordingly. It’s not as hard as you may think to find people who’ll buy into that. Find someone to be your first case-study. Give them a great price in exchange for a case-study. We contacted Ten Alps (Bob Geldof’s production company) – they used us on a project with Richard Dawkins.”
Aframe is a way of storing and working with video from anywhere and is different to the public clouds already available. “Video requires a huge file size and people want to work all over the place. The clouds out there aren’t designed for that. We specialise in video so ours is tailored to that which gives us a lot of performance gains and works better for us cost-wise. The public clouds are expensive.
“All we ever projected was that we cared about your project. We wanted people to know that nothing is more important to us than the safety and security of their video content. So we don’t trust anybody else to do it for us – we do it ourselves. And once we started to get that message out it’s a big reason we have won some of the customers we have.
